To celebrate Martin Luther King, the Journal published a story on Lorenzo Kelly. A pastor at a local church who lived in Florida when the South was still segregated.

A memorial was dedicated to two Rapid City police officers killed in the line of duty in August.

leo p. hamel, 1918-2011.

I received a message that Mr. Hamel passed away on Oct. 23. I met him briefly and took his portrait as an intern for the Valley News last year. The article was for the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and Hamel was the first cub master for Troop #38. He was kind, easy going, and even though we had just met, he talked to me like we knew each other for years.

Believe it or not, these are pictures from haunted houses. Well, kind of. The top picture is from a haunted school in Keystone, S.D. A historical 19th century schoolhouse to be exact. The 2nd picture is from a haunted mine... a 19th century goldmine turned into a haunted mine. I have plenty of pictures of spooky people acting scary and stuff. I like these pictures, though, because of the mood from the manmade fog. So... happy halloween.

Glen Stewart: Holding His Own

“I lived the good life when I was 24. I was making 19 bucks an hour.”

Glen Stewart, 43, of Clinton, Mo., once had his own roofing business and made enough money to help out his parents and even fix up their house. Over the years, he ran into a series of events that changed his life: He lost his eye when a friend smashed a piece of firewood through his car window; he was involved in a car accident; and his father died in a tornado.

“My father's death left me depressed,” Glen said.

Today Glen lives in the same house he grew up in. He makes his money working odd jobs and living off of social security while his mom and three roommates help pay the utility bills. Glen finds a way to make the most of life with his unique charm and personality. Clinton residents familiar with Glen enjoy his company and revel in his oddities. Those distant from Glen are alarmed by the state of his house. Despite Glen's difficulties maintaining an everyday job, he gets by on his five acre grandfathered-house in Clinton.

Caretaker John Brockelsby feeds Methuselah a piece of watermelon on the Galapogos tortoise's 130th birthday at the Reptile Gardens in Rapid City. Methuselah was born in 1881 and came to Reptile Gardens in 1956. The oldest tortoise in the world is estimated at 170 years old. "Watermelon to a tortoise is like a chocolate cake to a kid," Brockelsby said.

Rapid City's mayoral race came to a vote Tuesday. The city elected a runoff between incumbent Alan Hanks and Sam Kooiker. Photographically speaking, Kooiker is not the ideal candidate. a new home for seth.

i. Kim Crosswait, right, a physical therapist, leads Seth England through water therapy at England's home in Spearfish. At 9-years old, England is the oldest living child with Tae Sachs disease, a neurological disorder that affects one's muscular movement. England undergoes water therapy once-a-week. With water therapy, the warm water helps Engand move his joints and places hydrostatic pressure on his lungs. England has undergone water therapy since he was two-years old. "He usually giggles and laughs while in the water," Crystal England, his mother, said. "Its the one thing he gets to do that he enjoys. Its really good for him."

ii. Crystal England, left, and her husband John, right, place their son, Seth, 9, bottom, onto his bed for the first time in their new home in Spearfish. "We used to be able to lift him ourselves," Crystal England said, referring to when her son was younger and lighter. "Now it takes two of us." Today, Seth England weighs about 70 pounds.

iii. Crystal England checks Seth while he lays in bed at their old home. "Seth is important in this community because he shows every life is valuable and every life is precious," England said. "It doesn't matter if you can see or walk, the time that is invested in his life will be well worth it."

iv. Seth England lays in bed while attached to a BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) machine at his old home. England cannot speak. Instead he communicates using facial expressions and noises. The BiPAP machine forces air into England's lungs to keep them inflated.

v. Birthday cards for Seth England's 9th birthday are placed on a piano inside his old house in Spearfish. Recently, England's family realized Seth reacts positively to music and in particular to Elvis. For England's latest birthday on February 23, his family threw him an Elvis-themed party.

vi. Roy England, no relation to the England family, of Concrete Specialties wipes his forearm while pouring cement mix onto the driveway of the Englands' new home in Spearfish. Concrete Specialties workers, along with other members of the community, are volunteering their time to help build the Englands' new home. The Englands' church, the Countryside Community Church in Spearfish, raised more than $110,000 for the new house.

Bob Morgan sits in his kitchen. Morgan was a bus driver for the Rapid City school district. He was involved in a head-on collision with a truck on February 8, 2010. Although Morgan was not at-fault for the accident, the school district fired him once his sick leave ran out.
